The blood group is determined by the genes found on the chromosome 9. Blood group A contains antigen A on red cells with the antibody B present in the plasma.

A and B genes are dominant in a relationship. The following are the patterns of inheriting A + blood type from the parents.

  • If the blood group of parents is O and A, then the child’s blood group will be either O or A.
  • If the blood group of parents is O and AB, then the child’s blood group will be either A or B.
  • If the blood group of parents is A and A, then the child’s blood group will be either O or A.
  • If the blood group of parents is A and B, then the child’s blood group will be either O, A, B or AB.

A person having an A positive blood type has the antigen A in the red cells. So such people can accept A+ and A- blood.

They can also accept the blood types O+ and O- if they are A and B antigen free. Any other blood type can adversely affect the immune system.

An A+ blood group person has antigens A and Rh present in the blood so he can donate blood to the A+ and AB+ blood groups only. Red blood cells can be donated every 56 days.

5. Plasma Compatibility

A positive blood type does not have A antibody so the blood group A can receive plasma from blood group A and AB.

But the A plasma can be donated to the blood groups O and A. A person can donate plasma every 28 days.

6. Rh factor

Rh factor is present in the blood. There are two types: Rh positive and Rh negative. This indicates genetic differences. An A+ blood type person has Rh positive in the blood.
